Simple Steps to Effective Networking

Graham Hill

Creating effective networks is vital – successful business today is conducted through networks of business associates, satisfied clients, suppliers and colleagues.

Networking is much more than just showing up and handing out a business card, it involves creating added value through positioning for mutual gain for both/all parties.

Some simple steps* that can assist with making your networking efforts more effective:

• Always have an introduction planned (and rehearsed)
• Practice the make or break handshake
• Contribute actively to the conversation, even if it is by listening
• Move out of your comfort zone
• Respect the business card as representing the person’s identity
• Do little things that will count
• Follow up after the conversation or event with gratitude
• Utilise every opportunity and find new ones
